Meet the Bupa UK Clinical Fellows!

Posted : 11 July 2019

With their fellowship year drawing to a close, the Bupa UK Clinical Fellows are excited to tell you all about the work that they have been doing.

Dr Aamena Bharmal

I'm Aamena and I am a medical clinical fellow. This year I have learnt so much about Bupa and it has been amazing to work with so many different people across the businesses to improve patient care. My main projects have been with the care homes and insurance businesses to improve end-of-life care, through updating policies, training and services so that they we can deliver excellent person-centred care. I am also really pleased to say that the we launched an ethics committee at the Cromwell hospital, which is the first in a private hospital in the UK. We were invited to present our work at the National Clinical Ethics conference last Friday at Cambridge – which was really well received. On a more personal note, I really love travelling and trekking, and as you are reading this I am currently in Albania for a fortnight to go on some hikes in the gorgeous Balkan's national park.

Dr Nicola Read

I'm Nicola, a respiratory registrar by background, and I chose Bupa for my fellowship to see what I could learn from a working within a different healthcare system. My perception of private healthcare has been completely altered by my experience at Bupa and I have learnt so much about the similarities in challenges and process that exist within the NHS and Bupa. The biggest project I have been working on is with the amazing oncology support team in Salford Quays to re-design the survivorship programme. This has taught me a lot in terms of the processes involved in quality improvement, but also about how care can truly be patient centred and the impact that this has on patient experience. Outside of work I am looking forward to visiting my most favourite place on the weekend: Cornwall. I am looking forward to a long walk and a BBQ!

Dr Gurman Sond

I'm Gurman and I am the dental fellow. This year I have had the opportunity to work alongside some truly inspirational people and be involved in a variety of projects relating to Children's Oral Health, Medical Insurance and Dental Strategy to name a few.  This has fostered a greater understanding of the political, economic and administrative challenges behind the decisions and actions we take as clinicians.  Away from work, this year has also been an interesting challenge in first-time fatherhood. I'm thankful for all of the 'tips, tricks and tales' of parenthood from friends and colleagues which have been invaluable in consoling my wife and I through many a sleepless night.

Ms Shabina Azmi

I'm Shabina and I am the pharmacist clinical fellow. I have had a brilliant 9 months within Bupa, working with some amazing leaders within the organisation. My main aim for this year has been to raise the profile and value of including pharmacists within the business, particularly within Care Services. I have provided on-hand subject matter expertise, supported in redesigning the monthly and weekly audits and lead the redesign and writing the medicines management policy and separate processes. I have recently started a quality improvement project in care homes to support our front line to deliver even better care to our residents. I have worked on other pieces of work too but don't want to bore you with too much! Out of work, I love to travel and visit new places, having been to Argentina, Brazil, Valencia and France so far this year…I'm already thinking about my next break!

In June, we collectively presented at the Bupa UK Exploring Developments in Healthcare event. The presentation focussed on how 3D printing is impacting healthcare. Please watch this space as we will be sharing a recording of this presntation in a couple of weeks!

Although we are really sad that we only have a couple of months left at Bupa, it has truly been an amazing year for us. We want to thank Bupa for being so welcoming and inclusive – as that has made the experience for us. There will be new clinical fellows joining in September and we want to wish them all the best of luck.
